Graduate Certificate in Teacher Inquiry

The Graduate Certificate in Teacher Inquiry is designed for PK-12 educators who wish to deepen their practice using a systematic and intentional, data-driven approach. This specialized program equips educators with essential data literacy skills, enabling them to critically examine and enhance their teaching methods, leadership methods, and student outcomes within their own communities of practice.

Participants in this certificate program will engage in three interlinked courses that build foundational knowledge and skills in teacher inquiry, fostering a reflective stance toward their practice:

  1. Introduction to Inquiry (EDG 6067)
This course lays the groundwork for graduate studies in teacher inquiry. Educators will be introduced to various models of teacher inquiry, examining both historical and contemporary theoretical frameworks. The course emphasizes reflective practice, encouraging participants to engage in inquiry within their professional contexts. By the end of the course, educators will be able to compare different inquiry models, articulate the significance of teacher inquiry in pedagogical development, and begin their own inquiry projects.
  2. Action Research Mid-Program (EDG 6911)
As a mid-program experience, this course focuses on implementing systematic, collaborative, and self-reflective forms of inquiry. Educators will develop skills in question development, data collection, data analysis, and the presentation of findings. The course is designed to address specific classroom challenges, increase understanding, and contribute to the broader field of education. Emphasis is placed on conducting research within the classroom to improve teaching and learning, with an additional focus on the ethical dimensions of teacher inquiry. Note: The Mid-Program EDG 6911 experience requires program director approval.
  3. Action Research Capstone (EDG 6911)
In this capstone experience, participants will apply their inquiry skills to a comprehensive research project within their educational context. The course continues to build on the skills acquired in the previous courses, including research design, data analysis, and the communication of findings. Educators will engage in a systematic form of inquiry that is collective, collaborative, and critical, contributing to educational decision-making and policy development. The capstone course is repeatable up to 6 credits, allowing educators to extend their inquiry into various areas of interest.

The Graduate Certificate in Teacher Inquiry is an ideal pathway for educators committed to becoming reflective practitioners who leverage research to continuously improve their instructional practices and contribute to the broader educational community. Through this program, educators will be empowered to conduct meaningful research that addresses the complexities of teaching and learning in today's diverse classrooms.
