Teaching English Abroad Certificate

Certificate Description 

The Teaching English Abroad Certificate prepares candidates to become teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in U.S. settings as well as teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) in international settings.

This program is designed to align with domestic and international ESOL core concepts:

Methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL);

  1. ESOL curriculum and materials development;
  2. Cross-cultural communication and understanding;
  3. Applied linguistics; and
  4. Testing and evaluation of ESOL.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the certificate will be able to:

  • Implement the key foundational linguistic theories into effective teaching practices
  • Plan dynamic language lessons designed to help students develop the aural and oral skill sets necessary to master speaking and listening in English
  • Plan dynamic language lessons designed to help students develop the skills associated with reading comprehension and fluency
  • Construct effective assessments to evaluate their learners’ competencies in all skill areas
  • Use their knowledge of important considerations for teaching in their chosen learning context with adult learners in the U.S., or with varied age groups internationally
  • Teach English without knowing the native language of their students
