Request for Non-Graduate Faculty to Teach Graduate Courses
The Request for Non-Graduate Faculty to Teach Graduate Courses form is used to nominate a non-graduate faculty member to teach a graduate course. The department must submit the form once every three years for each course the faculty teaches. If a contract is submitted for an adjunct who is not approved to teach a graduate course, ASA/OIE will send it back with a request to complete the Request for Non-Graduate Faculty to Teach Graduate Courses.
Research Graduate Faculty: All tenured or tenure-earning faculty who possess the earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline are eligible to become members of the Research Graduate Faculty.
Teaching Graduate Faculty: Faculty on continuing lines (e.g., instructors, lecturers, clinical faculty) who possess the earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline, or equivalent education and/or experience, are eligible to become members of the Teaching Graduate Faculty.
The Department Chair must nominate faculty to become Research or Teaching Graduate Faculty using the nomination form. For Teaching Graduate Faculty nominations, faculty who do not possess the earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline, must also submit the Faculty Credential Exception Request Form. Once a faculty member is approved the Graduate School will contact departments when renewals are needed. Refer to the Graduate Faculty website for the nomination form and additional information.
Adjuncts and visiting faculty are ineligible for graduate faculty status. A Request for Non-Graduate Faculty to Teach Graduate Courses is required for requests to assign adjuncts or visiting faculty to a graduate course. (See Policy: 2.0260P Graduate Faculty Membership and Review).
Faculty Credential Exception Request
If the proposed faculty member does not have the usual terminal degree required to teach the course, please complete the Faculty Credential Exception Request, which lists the exceptional credentials or experiences that the candidate possesses and that would qualify them to teach the course. Please note that a request to approve non-graduate faculty without a terminal degree cannot be considered before review and approval is granted by Academic Affairs. The Faculty Credential Exception Request form can be found under the Instructional Faculty Credentialing Process tab on the Academic Affairs Faculty Administration & Personnel Resources website.
