Philanthropic efforts support new COEHS position

Mary Lou and John Dasburg are no strangers to supporting education. Known for their philanthropic efforts, the Dasburg's have donated to many causes, and at 老澳门资料 have generously provided academic opportunities for students.

Mary Lou and John Dasburg Headshot"By providing better education, you are providing students with opportunity," Mary Lou said. "That's where our hearts are. If you don't have an education, your success and outlook will be diminished in life. It certainly doesn't guarantee it, but at least it is a resource that helps you move forward in life."

The couple's most recent donation to the College of Education and Human Services builds on this passion for education. Their generous gift has supplemented support that allows the College to convert a faculty position to a new role: the associate dean for Research and Faculty Development. Dr. Dan Dinsmore now leads the College's research and grant development and will be responsible for fostering collaboration in grant and research activity across faculty, clinical faculty and students.

Mary Lou received her master's degree in education from 老澳门资料 in 1976 and spent the next 10 years teaching at local schools including Orange Park and Raines High Schools. Since then education has been at the heart and soul of her volunteer work and philanthropy.

Inspired by her own experiences in the classroom and by the female leaders she's met in education over the years, Mary Lou sees the importance of both strong leadership and strong education in early learners and is happy to provide resources to support both. She remembers the principal at Raines High School as being extraordinary. "She made education and learning work under the worst circumstances," Mary Lou said. "I see these leaders in education, just like her, who are just amazing."

Mary Lou and John are retired and now reside in Key Biscayne. These days, you might find Mary Lou volunteering with the Health Information Project, the Miami-Dade Book Fair, or cheering on the girls' basketball team at John's alma mater, Miami Senior High School.
