Best Practices for Employer Job Posting

Make sure your postings are clear, with details about the position. Vague descriptions show the candidate that the employer may not have thought much about the position. Some tips to help you with your posting:

  • List day-to-day duties and tasks, along with specific responsibilities.
  • Do not be too vague in your job descriptions, for students/alumni are more apt to not apply if not enough details are outlined.
  • Indicate what majors or field of study you prefer, or if you are open to receiving applications from all majors.
  • Indicate how many years of experience you prefer. Please keep in mind most students or recent alumni will not apply to a position seeking more than 1 year of experience.

Make Your Job Posting as Dynamic as the Job. It is up to you to make your job posting attention-grabbing and engaging. Rather than just including text, consider including the following in your description.

  • Photos that tell stories about the culture and uniqueness of your company
  • Links to videos/articles that highlight your company’s overall mission, values and success
  • Provide company social media links

Pay your interns. We understand that budgets may not allow for much, but if a student is compensated for their work, you will see better outcomes and get a stronger candidate pool.

Post your pay rate. Students and alums are often juggling multiple priorities, so knowing what they can make with your organization will help you find more interested candidates.

*Generally speaking, most positions are posted for a maximum one month period to encourage early action from students. Employers are welcome to renew any posting for as many one-month periods as they would like.
