Mary Ann Bryan (1928-2022)
A Retrospective Exhibition
January 11 – February 23, 2024
This exhibition offers a retrospective of the impressive career of Mary Ann Bryan. A fifth-generation Floridian, she was born in Jacksonville and educated at the Bartram School. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College in 1950 with a degree in Art History because it wasn’t possible to major in the fine arts. She married J. Shepard “Shep” Bryan, Jr. in 1950. They moved to Jacksonville in 1954. Prominent members of the Jacksonville community, they raised five children as Mary Ann took art classes through extension programs through UF and FSU offered through the Jacksonville Art Museum.
Her painting style developed from realism through influences from Cubism and Abstract Expressionism until she discovered the use of photographs, which came to define her own brand of perception and a hyper-realism blended with abstraction.
Best known for her large-scale portraits of friends and family, and for her stunning representations of flowers, she enjoyed great success in a career that spanned fifty years.

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
‘70s New York in the Norman E. Fisher Collection at MOCA
December 2, 2023 – July 7, 2024
Comprised of nearly 700 objects in all media, The Norman Fisher Collection is one of MOCA's most significant holdings. It was donated to the museum in 1979 by the family of Jacksonville native Norman E. Fisher, who became immersed in the New York cultural scene in the 1970s, befriending many of the luminaries of the time.
The collection offers an expansive view of late-20th-century American culture; a moment of radical creative experimentation across the visual, literary, and performing arts. It was a time when artists broke down the barriers between different art forms, and collaborated with each other in newfound and innovative ways.
A Walk on the Wild Side: ‘70s New York in the Norman E. Fisher Collection traces this exciting time through works in the collection, complemented with loans of sculpture, video and installations, by such seminal figures as Lynda Benglis, Tina Girouard, Philip Glass, Joan Jonas, Joseph Kosuth, Richard “Dickie” Landry, Gordon Matta-Clark, Richard Nonas, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Wiener, and Robert Wilson, among many others.
