Freshman Admit Nursing (FAN) | BS in Nursing

Kick-start Your Nursing Career with 老澳门资料’s Freshman Admit Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Track

The School of Nursing offers a baccalaureate nursing program with a freshman admission concentration in the Prelicensure track for students who want to prepare for a dynamic, exciting career in nursing. The curriculum provides a strong scientific base of study with a diverse array of clinical experiences and unique opportunities to work with vulnerable and under-served populations through a community-based approach. It supports engagement with the community throughout the nursing major by nurturing and building relationships with community agencies consistently over time through an innovative home-basing of students in a designated community for the entire length of the nursing program.  The curriculum also provides a strong foundation for graduate study in nursing. Upon graduation from the program, students will sit for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam.

Admissions and Enrollment

Admissions

The Freshman Admit Nursing (FAN) concentration of the Prelicensure BSN track is for first-time in college (FTIC) students and offers fall admission annually. The program is cohort-based, and each future cohort will enroll up to 50 new student each fall semester.  Once admitted into the FAN track, progression is according to a specific course sequence, which cannot be accelerated.  Please note, students who begin the FAN track cannot leave it and then later apply for admission to the Regular Prelicensure B.S.N. track.

FAQ

Please refer to the FAQs page for an explanation of costs typically incurred for this degree track; these are applicable at the point when FAN students begin taking clinical courses. This information is provided under theRegular and Accelerated Prelicensure FAQs area as FAN students are technically a type of Regular Prelicensure student.

Enrollment Requirements

  • Completion of the program in four (4) years with a spring graduation
  • Starting the first fall semester, FAN students take one (1) nursing course every semester for the first three (3) semesters with the exception of the summer between the freshman spring semester and the sophomore fall semester. They will be fully enrolled in nursing courses from their sophomore year, and summer semester forward.
  • All BSN prerequisites must be completed by the end of the sophomore year, or spring semester while students may finish any remaining General Education/Gordon Rule courses during their third (3rd) or fourth (4th) year.
  • Admitted FAN students must attain at least a 3.00 cumulative undergraduate GPA and BSN prerequisite GPA at the end of the sophomore year, or spring semester to remain in the FAN program.
  • Once the clinical courses have begun, all nursing courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better in order to progress.

Two types of courses make up the nursing curriculum: professional courses and clinical/laboratory courses. Clinical/laboratory courses are distinguished by the C or L that follows the course number. The nursing curriculum is a full-time course of study and follows a specific sequence.

The School of Nursing is seeking approval for revisions to this degree track, which will include layout and curricular updates.  The hope is that the new version is ready for those entering in Fall 2025.  Updates regarding the approval process may be posted periodically.  Questions regarding the proposed program revisions are welcome.

  • What are the costs related to the Prelicensure BSN tracks?

The largest expense in the Prelicensure BSN tracks, which include the Freshman Admit Nursing track, is related to tuition and fees.  These are set annually by the university and published for review at www.unf.edu/tuition/.  To roughly estimate your tuition and fees costs, multiple the current rate (in-state versus out-of-state residency status) by 52 credits for the APL program or by 60 credits for the RPL program.  Lab courses will also incur a $15 lab/materials fee.  Additionally, all students are expected to have access to and use of a reliable laptop computer and printer/scanner.  Prices will vary by brand and model.

Books for the two programs also comprise a large cost.  The total book cost for those admitted to Summer and Fall 2022 is approximately $1,430 for the APL program and $1,650 for the RPL program.  Several of the books may be used throughout the program.  The program does strive to keep book costs at a minimum where possible.  Another large cost for both tracks is related to the equipment used in labs and clinicals; the nursing skills kit is a one-time purchase for $350 that includes various materials for skills lab as well as a stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, pen light, and bandage scissors.

In addition to tuition and book costs, the program requires special uniforms and study resources.  Students will utilize HESI assessment materials throughout the program; this package is approximately $1200 and is split into two (2) payments of $600 each.  They also purchase study skills from Lippincott for approximately $140.  Additionally, scrub uniforms for hospital experiences run about $70-85 per set; two (2) sets are strongly encouraged.  A community experience uniform is also required that includes khaki pants (prices vary) and a 老澳门资料 Nursing polo shirt ($30-$35).  Also, students with visible arm tattoos must cover them with a UN long-sleeved shirt while in hospital or community engagement settings; this shirt is $20.  An optional scrub jacket is also available that may be worn in the clinical area outside of patient care experiences and is currently about $35.  Appropriate footwear for each uniform will vary by store and brand.  Students are required to obtain a 老澳门资料 Nursing ID badge for $8.  For those who also need a new 老澳门资料 student ID, which also serves as an access card for the library, gym, and sporting events, the total cost is $15.  Also, a virtual 老澳门资料 parking decal will be required; annual decal rates range from $95-$280 depending on parking preferences.

Additionally, background checks, fingerprints, drug screens, health histories, immunization records, and CPR certification are required for program enrollment and are documented through centralized systems. The background check, fingerprinting, and drug screens take place through CastleBranch for an initial fee of $140; additional updates to the background check and drug screens are due part way through the program for an additional $75 fee.  Health histories and immunization records are required for entry to clinical and community sites; myClinical Exchange is used for this record maintenance with a $80 fee for two years.  The costs associated with obtaining an updated physical and immunizations/titer proof will vary by provider and insurance coverage.  CPR certification course prices will vary by organization/agency, but tend to range from $40-$55 for a two-year certification.

Finally, success by the programs' graduates on NCLEX-RN is of the utmost importance.  To enhance the HESI resources and learning experiences in the program, students entering their final semester of BSN study are strongly encouraged to purchase study resources for the NCLEX.  Several resources are available and range in cost from $250-$500.

Costs associated with the program are subject to change without notice.  A full list of updated costs is provided in the welcome letter upon program admission. This is normally sent via e-mail shortly after the School of Nursing's RSVP window.  Questions regarding financial aid and scholarships should be directed to fa@unf.edu.
