Africana Studies Bachelor of Art

Mission Statement

Africana Studies promotes the academic study of peoples and cultures throughout the African Diaspora. Multidisciplinary methods of inquiry and research give students broad theoretical approaches to the central questions and concerns of Diaspora studies-including race, culture, identity, diversity, history, and society. Students examine these central concerns through regional, national, and global perspectives. 

Student Learning Outcomes

Communication

  • Communicate, orally and in writing, knowledge of the creative/critical work of and scholarship pertaining to Africans outside the continent of Africa

Critical Thinking

  • Locate and critically analyze contributions of various African-derived cultures to the mainstream culture of local and global diasporic communities

Content/Discipline Specific Knowledge

  • Apply a holistic understanding of the African diaspora as a simultaneously cultural, geographic, and ideological concept to current political and social issues
  • Recognize and evaluate various manifestations of race-based inequality
  • Relate the connections between theoretical, text-based knowledge and “real-world” applications/manifestations of this knowledge

Assessment Approach

Faculty will assess student learning through a variety of methods, including but not limited to tests/quizzes, essays, discussions, presentations, portfolios, and projects.
