MOCA Jacksonville unveils newest exhibition
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville, an institute of the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ×ÊÁÏ, unveiled a brand-new sculpture to the public yesterday, Thursday, Feb. 29.
The sculpture, , was created by American artist Frank Stella specially for MOCA’s 100th anniversary. The installation features two of the artist’s iconic stars stacked in a single sculpture that fills the museum’s massive Atrium.
Stella has often used the star as a motif throughout his career. He has explored its form in multiple variations of two-dimensional, free-standing and wall-relief sculptural shapes, both abstract and figurative. His latest works, including Jacksonville Stacked Stars, defy the forces of gravity and the norms of sculpture.
After having a previous MOCA exhibit featuring a print series in 2018, MOCA is honored to have Stella return to the museum to present his latest work.
The installation is accompanied by an exhibition of prints from the MOCA collection and loans from local collectors.
The event was kicked off with a press conference featuring a statement from City of Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan honoring MOCA’s 100th anniversary and its place as the first visual arts organization in Jacksonville. Other speakers included ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ×ÊÁÏ President Moez Limayem, Caitlín Doherty, MOCA executive director, Preston Haskell, MOCA board member emeritus, and Anne Joseph, MOCA board chair.
