Sustainability in Housing and Residence Life
A sustainable campus. A sustainable living area. A sustainable community. It starts with us.
Ways Housing and Residence Life Contributes to a Sustainable Campus and Community
- We are in the process of retrofitting the lighting in both the exteriors and interiors of our Housing Areas to LED
- We are committed to green chemical usage and consider sustainability when purchasing chemicals and paper products
- We provide specially designed shower heads and aerators in our Housing Areas to reduce water waste
- We utilize drought resistant landscaping features to lower water waste
- We facilitate the annual Give & Go End of Year donation drive where we assist residents with getting their items to local charities instead of in the trash
- We regularly pick up trash and clean the areas near the wetlands to mitigate impact to our natural environment from litter
You Can Contribute By:
- Reduce waste by reusing items instead of using one time (plastics)
- Use reusable plates, cups, straws, utensils and food storage containers
- Use reusable bags instead of plastic bags
- Use reusable bottles instead of plastic water bottles
- Recycle materials such as plastics and clean cardboard and paper
- Don’t litter – our areas are surrounded by sensitive wetlands that are impacted by waste
- Remember to turn your lights off to conserve electricity
- Unplug or turn off electronics when they are not in use
- Make sure to turn off your faucets and showers to conserve water
- Set a shower timer
- Take the shuttle, walk or ride a bike to class instead of driving your car
- Report any leaks or running toilets using the maintenance request work order system
