The Willard O. Ash Award

Purpose

The Willard O. Ash Award was established in honor of the founding Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The award, funded initially by Mrs. Louise Ash in honor of her husband, is intended to recognize a senior who embodies Dean Ash’s philosophy of a broad-based education in the liberal arts and sciences. For example, a typical nominee might major in history and minor in chemistry, or major in mathematics and minor in philosophy, or major in sociology and minor in music.

Selection Criteria 

  1.  Students eligible for such scholarships must:
    • Be a senior (with at least 90 semester credit hours) in Fall
    • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
    • Enroll full-time and taking at least 12 semester hours for Fall and Spring semesters
    • Be a major in the College of Arts and Sciences
    • Be able to show evidence that he or she is pursuing a coherent and Broad-based undergraduate education incorporating both the sciences and the liberal arts
  2.   Application Instructions:
    • A one-page, single-spaced essay describing (i) your undergraduate educational choices, interests and goals, and (ii) how your choices, and interests and goals meet the spirit of the Ash Award
