The undergraduate nutrition program is a rigorous science-based program. Students learn how to interpret and translate nutrition research into meaningful recommendations for consumers. Most of our program graduates pursue the registered dietitian (RD) credential. There are typically three required steps to obtain the RD credential:

1. Complete an ACEND-accredited undergraduate nutrition/DPD program.
2. Complete an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship (also called supervised practice) and a graduate degree.
3. Pass the national examination for registered dietitians.

The Community Nutrition and Food Concentration offers a relevant, evidence-based approach to the didactic and experiential components of the program. Graduates in this concentration will have a broad range of career path options which include nutrition education, food sustainability, and wellness. Graduates will also be equipped to enter the food industry and are eligible to take the Certified Dietary Manager Exam, a lucrative credential in today’s food service industry.

Students who are pursuing OT, PT, PA school, and other health-related careers may also pursue this concentration as a pathway toward their goal. Students should check with their advisor to see what other prerequisites may be required for admission into their program of interest.

This concentration will not culminate in a verification statement which is required for students who wish to pursue a Dietetic Internship to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Students who wish to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Registered Dietetic Technician should pursue the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) concentration instead.

The length of the program is dependent on the intern’s ability to locate preceptors, obtain approval from the Program Director, obtain signed affiliate agreements, and complete the required number of supervised practice hours, not to exceed 24 months.
