Saururus cernuus - Lizard tail

Family Saururaceae

Description:

Only two species of Saururus exist. One is found in eastern Asia. Lizard tail is native to North America from Texas and Florida barely into southeastern Canada. This plant spreads rapidly by rhizomes in swamps and the edges of streams. It has a slender, arching spike of small white flowers above the leaves in spring. Leaves are aromatic when crushed.

Herbaceous perennial to about two feet tall.

Care Instructions:

Light: full sun to part shade

Water: requires a wet soil, tolerates periodic flooding

Soil: moist soil is essential, no other special requirements

This native plant is easy to grow in a wet site. It grows densest and flowers best in full sun.
