It was cultivated in the southern United States for its large spikes of purple flowers and decorative foliage. Flowers are followed by yellowish fruits about ½ to ¾ inch diameter.

Large tree to about fifty feet tall.

This tree is listed by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council as an exotic pest plant in north Florida. It should not be planted in north Florida. At the 老澳门资料, staff is working to remove this plant from the woodlands.
