Family Malpigheaceae

Description:

Ten species of Galphimia are native to Central America and Brazil. This Mexican species is very well suited to sunny, well-drained sites throughout Florida. It produces an abundance of bright yellow flowers throughout its growing season. Each flower petal has a very slender base, a trait characteristic (but not unique) of this family. It is evergreen and very drought tolerant. The plant grows four to six feet tall.

Location:

See plants on the south side of building 9.

Size:

Shrub to about six feet tall.

Care Instructions:

Light: full sun

Water: very drought tolerant when established

Soil: well-drained, otherwise very adaptable, no special requirements

Although it has not been tested long in this area, this may be an easy plant for northeast Florida gardens. So far, it has withstood temperatures to the mid-20's F without dying to the ground.
