In the United States, palm grass is used as an ornamental garden plant. It has an underground stem with wide leaves that arch up from the ground. Leaves may grow to about three feet tall. Clusters of yellow flowers are produced at the leaf bases close to the ground.

This plant seems to be at or near its northern limit in Jacksonville. It survives winter lows in the high teens to mid-twenties by dying to the ground and resprouting in the spring.
