Description:
The so-called "flowering" kale is one of a selection of kale with colorful leaves, typically with white or reddish coloration. Otherwise, it is the same as edible kale. This is a variable plant species that has been in cultivation for a long time. Collards, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower are selections from the same wild species that gave rise to kale. The wild species is native to Europe and north Africa.

Plants may be seen at entry areas of campus or in containers during the cool months of the year.
Size:
This is a herbaceous plant that grows about twelve inches tall.

Light: full sun
Water: somewhat drought tolerant, grows best with irrigation during dry spells
Soil: average soil, wide pH tolerance, no special requirements
In north Florida, these plants grow best as annuals during Florida's cool months. Since the color is provided by foliage, flowering kale provides non-stop color through the winter.
